AI Link Building Agent

An AI Link Building Agent is a chain of connected agents that does the research side of link building: finding prospects, filtering them for relevance, and locating a real contact. It finds two kinds of link opportunities: sites that can help you rank in regular search, and the pages AI answers cite for your buyers’ questions. The agent does a week of prospecting work in about 3 hours, and a human still approves and sends.

This page is for in-house marketers and owners deciding whether to have that research workflow built around their own data and their own rules: what it does, why owning it is different from renting the work, and what the build includes.

If you would rather rent the work, white-label link building is $160/hr, and 30 hours is $4,800. The same hours can go to GEO services: earning mentions on the pages AI answers cite.

What the agent does

Five stages. The first four are research. The last one prepares outreach and stops there.

Stage What the agent does What your team does
1. Competitor backlink mining Pulls competitor backlinks through the Ahrefs API and filters them by quality and topic Picks the competitors and sets the niche keywords
2. Boolean search prospecting Runs Google advanced search operators 20 pages deep to find resource pages, guest post pages, and roundups Approves the query set for each campaign
3. Relevance qualification Checks every prospect against topical and geographic keyword sets and removes duplicates Makes the final yes or no call on each site
4. Contact finding Finds one named contact and a real, published email per site Spot-checks results and handles blocked sites
5. Outreach preparation Fills personalization fields in fixed templates and builds a finished spreadsheet Reviews the sheet and sends it through your email platform

Details the table does not spell out:

  • Quality filters used in the build: Domain Rating 10 to 70, at least 100 estimated monthly organic visits, and no forums.
  • Boolean search also looks for unlinked mentions, and new results are checked against earlier batches for that campaign.
  • Borderline sites stay on the sheet instead of being dropped silently.
  • Contact search walks a set order: editor, content manager, marketing or PR, owner, then a generic inbox.
  • Pitch templates stay fixed. The agent fills personalization fields and does not rewrite the pitch.
Five-stage pipeline: the agent does the research and your team approves each step

Two kinds of link opportunities: search results and AI answers

Traditional link building looks for sites that help a page rank in Google: competitor backlinks, resource pages, guest post pages, roundups, and unlinked mentions. That is the work in the table above.

AI search adds a second list. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews which company to hire or which product to buy, the answer is built from other pages on the web, and many answers show their sources. Those cited pages are link opportunities too. A mention there can help your brand get named inside the answer, not just ranked below it. That is the core of generative engine optimization (GEO).

The two lists do not overlap as much as you might expect. In Justin’s study of 1,329 AI Overview citations, only 36% went to pages ranking on page one for that search. Prospecting from search results alone can miss many of the pages AI answers rely on.

The agent now finds both:

  • Search opportunities: sites found through competitor backlinks and Boolean search, filtered with the quality rules above.
  • AI answer opportunities: the pages AI answers cite, and the pages that show up in those answers, for the questions your buyers ask.

Both matter. Links help pages rank for the searches AI engines run behind the scenes, and mentions on cited pages help your brand get named. More on that in GEO vs. SEO.

There is no guarantee of AI citations. Answers change with the wording, the user, and the model. What the agent changes is the target list: outreach goes to the pages AI answers already use. If you would rather rent this work than own the agent, it is what Justin’s GEO services are built on.

Manual prospecting vs the agent

Factor Manual prospecting The agent
Google search depth Usually the first few pages All 20 pages on every query
Competitor backlinks reviewed What a person can review in a day Tens of thousands per competitor through the API
Duplicate checks Manual lookups in a sheet Checked in code against every earlier batch
Email accuracy Depends on the person Only published or indexed addresses
Who approves and sends The person doing the research A human still approves and sends. The agent only prepares the sheet.

Why own it

You own the asset

The keyword sets, the rules, and every prospect list stay with your company. If a vendor relationship ends or a VA leaves, the workflow does not leave with them.

It uses your data

Niches, quality thresholds, do-not-contact lists, and campaign history are yours. Shared agency processes and generic tools do not hold that context.

It compounds

Each campaign adds to what a good link looks like for your business. That improvement stays with you, not with another client’s account.

No ongoing hourly or per-link fee on the agent you own

Running another campaign on the agent you own does not add an hourly fee or a per-link charge. Renting prospecting time is a separate offer, and that one is billed by the hour.

Why this exists

Justin Davis has been building backlinks since 2015. In that time he has worked with more than 150 clients in law, real estate, healthcare, and software, and sent hundreds of thousands of outreach emails.

Prospecting was the step he could not hand off. Over that time he fired 500 link builders, and most of them could not match his quality bar, so he kept doing the research himself. He later rebuilt those steps as the agent. The write-ups are How I built an AI link building tool and I Rebuilt My Prospecting Process as an AI Agent.

Google

The agent does research. The risk is paid links that pass ranking credit, automated link schemes, and large-scale guest posting. A human still sends. The policy detail is in the FAQ below.

FAQ

What is an AI link building agent?

It is a chain of connected agents that does the research side of link building: finding prospects, filtering them for relevance, and locating a real contact. Your team gets a finished spreadsheet.

Does the agent find link opportunities for AI search?

Yes. Besides backlink opportunities for traditional SEO, it finds the pages AI answers cite and the pages that show up in those answers, so outreach can go to the sources AI search relies on. That is not a guarantee of AI citations. No one controls what an AI answer says.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO aims for rankings and clicks in search results. GEO aims for your brand to be named and cited inside AI answers. They overlap: links help pages rank, and mentions on the pages AI answers cite help your brand get named. See GEO vs. SEO.

How much does the custom build cost?

$9,600. That includes onboarding, one full 8-hour prospecting cycle, and setup around your niches, quality thresholds, and approval rules. There is no ranking guarantee and no promised link count.

Does the agent send the emails?

No. The pipeline stops at a spreadsheet. Someone on your team reviews it and sends through your own email platform.

Is the agent safe with Google?

Google’s spam policies target paid links that pass ranking credit, automated programs that create links, and large-scale spammy guest posting. The agent only speeds up research. A placement still depends on a person sending outreach and an editor choosing to publish or link. See Google’s link spam policies.

Does the agent guess email addresses?

No. It records an address only when that address is published on the site or returned by Hunter.io. It does not build an address from a name pattern. If there is no email, it records the contact form URL instead.

What tools does the agent use?

The Ahrefs API for competitor backlinks, Google advanced search operators on live results, on-page checks plus the Hunter.io API for contacts, and Google Sheets or Excel for the handoff to your email platform.
